Douglas Doubleday Obituary

Douglas Jay Doubleday, 91, passed away on May 22, 2017 at his residence in Kerrville. He was born March 3, 1926 in Deertrail, Colorado, and married Edith Sholin in 1949. In 1950 he earned his BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley with highest honors. Raised as a Quaker, during World War II he served in Civilian Public Service as a conscientious objector, and with the American Friends Service Committee during the Korean War. He received his Ph.D. in Public Administration at UC Berkeley in 1958. He was an academic throughout his working career. He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh; Chairman of the Political Science Department at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon; and Dean of the Graduate School of Public Administration at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. He ended his career as a Professor of Public Administration at Kuwait University in Kuwait, retiring in 1990. He and Edith moved to Tierra Linda in Kerrville, Texas in 1992. Jay held a global view of the world, and when work opportunities provided for international experiences he took his family abroad, first to Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s, then to Quito, Ecuador in the 1960s, and finally to Kuwait in the 1980s. He remained engaged in political and social issues throughout his life, and kept informed to an unusual level of detail. His efforts were directed towards raising awareness of injustice, and bringing about the reconciliation of disputes. He cherished his Quaker upbringing, and strove to be scrupulously honest and fair-minded. Other enjoyments included a love of fishing in mountain lakes and rivers; and a life-long interest in birds - he enjoyed watching and listening to those that visited their backyard at the Tierra Linda ranch. Jay is survived by his wife of 68 years, Edith Sholin Doubleday; brother John William (Bill) Doubleday; sons Steven Jay and wife Elizabeth (Liz), and Jock William; grandchildren Scott William Doubleday-Stern (wife Adria), and Katharine Ann (Kate) Doubleday; his great-grandchild Madeline; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a future date at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Kerrville, where Jay was an active participant. Because of his strong interest in public service organizations such as the American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, donations in his memory to such organizations are suggested.
