Susan Miyoko Horstmann lost her long and very difficult struggle with lung cancer on August 7, 2016. Although she never smoked and led a very active, happy and healthy life style, Susan was diagnosed with the disease in July 2005. Her strong physical condition and positive mental attitude enabled her to endure over 10 years of extensive chemotherapy. Susan is survived by Harold, her loving husband of 51 years, their four dogs, her brother Roy Higa, of Pepeeko, Hawaii, his wife Ethel, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her Gold Star parents Mr. and Mrs. Kotatsu Higa, her sister Clara Tobara, and her brothers Eddie, Ralph, and Charlie Higa. Prior to her retirement, Susan was the administrative officer for the U. S. Customs Service in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was also active with the Honolulu chapter of the American Business Women's Association and served as their chapter's president. In accordance with her wishes, no services will be held. Susan had willed her body to the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, however, at the time of her death the cancer had done too much damage to her organs for it to be accepted. Harold wishes to thank Dr. Rebecca Barrington, her staff, Allison Elro, RN, of Peterson Hospice, their staff, and caregiver Eva Mirelez for their wonderful professional help. Their compassion and outstanding assistance will be forever appreciated and remembered. He also wants to thank their many friends and neighbors for their love, their prayers, their generosity, their kindness, and their sincere expressions of sympathy.
