Mary Brake Obituary

Mary Murlene (Howerton) Brake passed away on 16 May 2017 in Kerrville, TX. Murlene was born on 18 May 1940 in Uvalde, TX to Murry L. Howerton and Ida Irene (Redburn) Howerton who both predeceased her. She is survived by her husband of more than 37 years, Paschal (Pete) Brake of Kerrville; Son Royce Layne Fechner and daughter-in-law, Theresa (McMullen) Fechner of Orange Grove TX; Daughter Honey Cealene (Fechner) Stone and son-in-law Steve Stone of Valrico, FL; Brother, Wayne Howerton and sister-in-law Janice Howerton of Calallan, TX and brother, Jerry Howerton. She is also survived by grand children: Amber (Stone) Canipe; Amy (Stone) Beck; Aaron Fechner; Adam Fechner; Amanda L. Fechner; Brittany Nicole Fechner; Rebecca Ann Fechner; Amanda (Matthaei) Price; William Matthaei; and more than 25 great grand children. Murlene so loved the little ones ... they were so precious to her. Special "adopted" grand daughters include Melissa Decker and Jenna Antico. Murlene graduated from Roy Miller High School in Corpus Christi, TX in 1958. Murlene had many jobs in her life. She was a telephone operator and managed apartments in Corpus Christi. She owned and operated a convenience store and hair salon in Dickinson, TX. She began Government service as secretary and then Office Engineer in Sigonella, Sicily; then as an Admin Specialist at the US Army V Corps in Frankfurt, Germany; and she served as a Family Housing Management Analyst at the Headquarters, US Army Corps of Engineers, Washington DC. While living in Albuquerque, NM, Murlene began one of the most important contributions of her life. She became deeply involved with the Dental Amalgam Mercury Syndrome (DAMS) organization whose mission is to educate the public about the health hazards of some dental practices and materials. She authored and edited information about such issues and published an international newsletter for nearly 20 years. She worked with others to organize and participate in health fairs and medical conferences to educate about informed consent with healthcare matters. Her success was realized with the many calls, notes and letters of gratitude from readers around the world. Murlene and husband, Pete retired to an RV lifestyle home-based in Texas until her health and mobility conditions precluded such travel.
