Anita "Nicki" Haberland Obituary

Anita “Nicki” Haberland, nee Gould, passed away on 16 December 2022 at the Kingsland Hills Care Center in Kingsland, TX.

She was born in 1932 in Massachusetts to Gertrude and James Gould. During her youth, her summers were spent near Lake Garfield, in Monterey, MA. The rest of the year, she lived in a variety of areas of New York City. She completed her degree in Glass Technology at Alfred University in New York. After graduating, she went to work for Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Tarentum, PA. She met her husband Jerry through the Pittsburgh Unitarian Universalist young adults group, the Jeff Club. In 1958 they were married. In 1960, they moved to Michigan where they designed and built the home they would live in for the next 29 years. While raising her two daughters, Nicki was part of the League of Women Voters, a member of the conservation committee for the Saginaw River wetlands and an active member of the Midland Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. In 1989, she and Jerry sold their house and moved into a travel trailer. They spent the next several years as “homeless transients,” as they liked to call it, living in the trailer, traveling the country. Finally in 1995, they purchased their final home in the Texas Hill Country in Ingram, Texas. Nicki was very active in the Kerrville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. She became involved with helping the local library and was an active member in several choruses. In 2011, her husband Jerry died. In 2014, Nicki took a cruise down the Danube River before finally retiring her traveling lifestyle. In the spring of 2017, Nicki moved into an assisted living facility. She resided there with her cat until the spring of 2022, when she moved to the Kingsland nursing home, where she spent her last months.

Nicki is survived by her daughters, Sheila (and husband Robert) and Debra (and husband David).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the National Audubon Society.
