Calbert Matthew Scarbro, 92, passed away from this life on the afternoon of Sept. 23, 2023, at his home in Kerrville.
He was born on Jan. 07, 1931, in Blakely, West Virgina to Benjamin and Evaline Scarbro. On June 21, 1951, Calbert married the love of his life, Freda Hudnall in Charleston, WV. Only a few short days later, Calbert left for basic training in the US Army. He was a Corporal from 1951-1953 serving a tour in Germany. In 1991, after working for 33 years, he retired from AK Steel in Mansfield, Ohio.
Calbert and Freda moved to Kerrville after his retirement. He was a church member for 30 years at First Baptist Church Kerrville. He was a member of the Family Sports Center; he stayed active weightlifting. He could bench upwards of 300lbs into his 70’s.
Calbert had a servant’s heart, giving back to others brought him great blessings. Calbert had a special blood type; this blood group helped supply needed antibodies for premature babies. He was recognized by the Red Cross as a 5-gallon blood donor. Another way Calbert gave back was to volunteer for Peterson Hospice for 11 years.
He was preceded by his parents; wife of 57 years, Freda; son, Darius; companion, Virgina Turner and 7 siblings.
Calbert was survived by his sons, Ronald Scarbro and wife Robin of Houston and Lester Scarbro and wife Francis of Comfort; grandchildren, Matthew (Amy) Scarbro of Houston, Calista (Wes) Petty of Comfort, Jay (Peggy) Scarbro of Terrell, Clifton (Rachel) Bernhardt of Columbus, OH and Jonathan Bernhardt of Columbus, OH; and 10 great grandchildren.
