Dennis John Hengstebeck, age 72, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at his home in Kerrville, Texas.
Dennis was born in Chicago, Illinois. In his late teens, he moved to Valparaiso, Indiana, where he was welcomed into the loving home of Cleola and Robert Hengstebeck. Through their generous hearts, Dennis became part of a family built on love rather than biology, joining seven siblings forming a close-knit family defined by care, compassion, and belonging.
Dennis remained in Indiana before moving to Michigan to attend college. He graduated from Western Michigan University, earning his bachelor’s degree in social work. Following his education, he dedicated his professional life to serving others as a social worker in the mental health field. He had a particular compassion for those struggling with addiction and devoted his career to helping individuals find hope, understanding, and support during difficult times.
Approximately eight years ago, Dennis relocated to Kerrville, Texas, where he settled and lived out the remainder of his life. Dennis had a deep love for music, especially the sounds of the 1960s and 1970s. He possessed a beautiful singing voice and found great joy in playing the guitar. Those who knew him best remember Dennis as quiet and reserved, yet easygoing and kind—a gentle presence who didn’t need many words to make an impact.
He is survived by his son, Joshua Hengstebeck; siblings, Denise Martinez, Mary Hengstebeck (Doug Martin), Robert Hengstebeck (Lisa), Esta Martin, David Hengstebeck (Debi), Pete Hengstebeck, and Nancy Soliz (Al); and two beloved grandsons.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Dennis’s life was one marked by compassion, humility, and quiet strength. He will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
