Dorothy Drescher Dulaney, age 96, died Tuesday, July 12, 2022 in Kerrville, after a brief illness.
Dorothy was born on December 05, 1925, in the Bronx, New York. Her parents, John and Barbara Drescher, were immigrants from Germany. Dorothy grew up in Sharon, Connecticut, where her parents moved in 1928 to establish a florist shop and nursery.
Dorothy graduated as valedictorian from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1945. She attended Connecticut College, graduating with a BA in Botany in 1949; and Columbia University, graduating with a MA in Botany in 1952. She subsequently worked in laboratories in the Northeast and Midwest, where she did experiments in plant breeding and the development of new antibiotics.
Dorothy met her husband, Eugene L. Dulaney, while working in a microbiology laboratory at Merck and Company in Rahway, New Jersey. They married in 1962, and lived in Summit, NJ until moving to Kerrville for retirement in 1991. She cared for Eugene for many years until his death from Alzheimer’s disease in 2006.
Dorothy’s hobby was investing. She treasured her independence, which she maintained to the end of her life. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, travel, and dining in restaurants and coffee shops. She is survived by her son, Gene; daughter in law, Aline; and three grandchildren, Emmalynn, Jordanna and Ethan.
Private memorial services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hill Country College Fund at Schreiner University (schreiner.edu). Dorothy loved eating in the Schreiner cafeteria and talking with the college students.
