James Daniel Hopkins was born on April 24, 1958, in Dayton, Ohio and was one of five children born to the late James Willard and Olive M. Hopkins. Growing up in Ohio, the family had horses that James loved to ride and care for. He was a true animal lover and had numerous favorite dogs in his life. In 1976, James graduated from Dixie High School in New Lebanon, Ohio, where he participated in track and basketball.
Over the years, James held jobs as a mechanic, truck driver and foreman for Enviolink. He will be remembered a family man who worked hard to provide for them. His children have numerous stories of going to work with Dad on the weekends. He had a way of making everyone around him feel cared for and heard when they came to him for advice or just to talk. Throughout all the jobs James worked, his favorite job was being a father, grandparent, and great-grandparent.
James found faith in God and would always remind his children to have faith and not worry. He would spend hours reading his Bible.
In James’ free time, he enjoyed fishing with his dad and his children. James’ dad introduced him to old western movies. He loved making his family listen to one of his favorite bands, Metallica. He also, enjoyed a wide selection of music ranging from the Beach Boys, Tom Petti, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osborn, and Three Dog Night.
He retired to the Hill Country in 2010. James passed away from this life on Jan. 20, 2023, at his home in Kerrville.
James is survived by his children, James Michael Hopkins of Katy, Melissa Danielle Hopkins of Canyon Lake, and John Gregory Hopkins of New Lebanon, Ohio; grandchildren, Christopher Isaac Flory, Jocelyn Maryah Flory, John Gregory Hopkins Jr and Mackenzie Renee Hopkins; great grandchild, Ivan James Sharpe; brother, George Hopkins; and sisters, Terri Murphy, and Tami Hopkins.
