Jody Blackwell Obituary

Jody Anthony Blackwell, 74, of Ingram, Texas, passed away on April 9, 2025, in San Antonio.

He was born on April 20, 1950, in Guatemala, to Joel and Carmen Blackwell. When Jody was a young boy, his family relocated to the United States, eventually settling in McAllen, Texas. He graduated from McAllen High School and continued his education at Texas State Technical School in Harlingen.

Jody devoted over three decades—33 years—to his work as a technician with Valley Orthopedic Brace Company, where he was respected for his dedication and skill. After retiring in 2013, he spent nine adventurous months living in Costa Rica before making a home in the Hill Country.

On May 10, 1974, Jody married the love of his life, Donna Lynn Vandever, in a lovely ceremony at her parents’ home in Mission, Texas. At the time of his passing, they were just shy of celebrating 51 years of marriage—a testament to their enduring love. Together, they raised their son, Nicklus, who shared many of Jody’s passions and values.

Jody was known for his deep sense of honor, his steadfast loyalty as a friend, and his unwavering support as a husband and father. He also had a remarkable sense of humor that brought joy to those around him.

Surfing was one of Jody’s lifelong passions. He first fell in love with the sport at age seven, when he found a longboard at a garage sale and convinced his mother to buy it for him. Though the board was far too heavy for his small frame, Jody’s determination never wavered. His talent on the waves stood out for decades, and even into his 70s, he remained active in the surfing world. At the last competition in South Padre, they didn’t have a division for his age group—so they invited him to judge the kids’ heats instead.

Jody also had a creative streak. He was a natural artist, known for his uncanny ability to draw a perfect circle and straight line freehand—something he was always happy to challenge others to try. He loved building things: model cars, boats, airplanes, and even guitars. His love for cars was something he proudly passed on to his son.

Jody is survived by his beloved wife, Donna, and their son, Nicklus, who will continue to carry his memory in their hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Pepper Anderson.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held at this time.
