Joe Richard Lopez Obituary

Joe Richard Lopez, 79, was called home to be with the Lord and to meet his beautiful mother for the first time on January 5, 2026, in Kerrville, Texas.

Richard was born on November 13, 1946, in Kerrville, Texas, to Trinidad Ayala Lopez and Fidel G. Lopez. He was raised by Luisa and Santana Vara Ayala and remained a proud Kerrville native and lifelong resident.

As a young child, Richard worked alongside his father as a sheep shearer. His father was a well-known tacinque in Kerrville history, and those early years instilled in Richard a strong work ethic that stayed with him throughout his life.

Richard worked as an airplane mechanic in San Antonio for 10 years before beginning a long and dedicated career at the Kerrville VA Hospital, where he proudly served for 43 years before retiring.

Richard married the love of his life, Lupe Pruneda Lopez, on Dec. 27, 1962, in Kerrville, Texas, Richard and Lupe shared a love that spanned over 60 years. Married in 1962, they grew together, raised their family together, and remained devoted to one another through every chapter of life.

Richard was a hardworking man and a devoted provider who took great pride in caring for his family. He worked tirelessly to ensure his girls had everything they needed and never missed an opportunity to support them. He was actively involved in his daughters’ school activities and never missed a moment. One of Richard’s proudest accomplishments was watching his daughters, Terry and Cindy, graduate from college.

He was a faithful member of Notre Dame Catholic Church and member of the Knights of Columbus. Richard was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, but an even bigger Tivy Antler football fan. He rarely missed a home or away game and was especially proud to watch his only grandson play under the Friday night lights.

Richard could often be found mowing and caring for his yard, something he took great pride in. He and his wife, Lupe, loved attending dances and listening to Spanish music. Some of his happiest moments were spent taking his family swimming or camping at Garner State Park.

Richard’s legacy is one of devotion to family. He deeply loved his wife, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, as well as his nieces and nephews. The Lopez home was always filled with laughter, gatherings, BBQs, and cherished memories.

Richard was preceded in death by his birth mother, Trinidad Ayala Lopez; his father, Fidel G. Lopez; his parents, Santana Vara Ayala and Luisa Ayala; his aunt, Josie Ayala; his siblings, Mike E. Ayala, Beatrice “Bea” Leal, and Carlos “Charlie” Lopez; and his in-laws, Olivia and Victor Pruneda.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lupe P. Lopez; his daughters, Terry Rodriguez and husband James, Cindy Morris and husband Douglas; his grandchildren, Sarah Escobar and husband JD, Victoria Kaiser and husband Garrett, Jamie Garza and husband Christian, and Douglas Ray Morris; his great-grandchildren, Aliyana Marie, Olivia Nicole, Ariella Jae, Avery Paige, Ezriyah Eva, and Corey Richard; his siblings, John “Chacho” Lopez and wife, Pee-Wee, Mariano “Morey” Lopez and wife Pat, Joseph Lopez, Chris Richard Lopez and wife Lisa, Rachael Constante and husband Jesse, and Tony Ayala and wife Karen; and his sisters-in-law, Etna Hernandez and Amanda Patino and husband Juan; and honorary son, Gilbert Villarreal.
