Kenneth "Ken" Smith Obituary

Kenneth E. “Ken” Smith, age 97, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025. He was born on December 30, 1927, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, to Ernest C. and Mary A. Smith. Ken was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rev. Howard L. Smith.

Ken graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, in 1949. His professional career spanned several decades, during which he made significant contributions in the fields of industrial combustion, instrumentation and controls. He worked for esteemed organizations such as US Steel, Salem Corporation, Andro Corporation, and Burgess & Niple, Limited. In 1976, Ken founded KE Smith Co., a small business specializing in the design of unique combustion and instrumentation packages. After relocating to Ingram, TX, in 1994, Ken retired in 1996.

Ken's personal life was marked by his deep commitment to family. He was married to his first wife, Lillian, from 1950 until her passing in 1972. Together, they had three children: sons, Garrett "Gary" and Gregory, and daughter Genine. Ken’s two grandsons, Garrett and Ryan Cole, were a source of immense pride and joy.

In 1973, Ken married Helen, and they enjoyed a fulfilling marriage until her passing in 2007. Helen brought two children into their union: son John Camp and daughter Nancy Scroggins, along with three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom Ken cherished deeply.

In 2008, Ken found happiness again with his partner, Elfriede Davis. They shared a loving relationship until her passing.

Ken’s faith was an integral part of his life. He was an active member of the Anglican Church movement from the mid-1970s onward. He played a pivotal role in the founding of St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in Kerrville, Texas, in 1994, and he later became a member of St. John's Anglican Church in Boerne. Throughout his church life, Ken served on various Vestries and held both Junior and Senior Warden positions.

Ken’s legacy of kindness, integrity, and faith will be remembered by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His contributions to his profession, his church, and his family have left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ken’s memory may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church or to the charity of your choice.

Ken is survived by his sons, Garrett "Gary"  and Gregory, daughter Genine, grandsons Garrett and Ryan Cole, stepson John Camp, stepdaughter Nancy Scroggins, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
