Mary Owen Bowen, 65 passed away peacefully on Thursday August 24, 2023 in Hunt Texas. Mary was born on January 27, 1958 to William and Betty Bowen.
She attended Robert E. Lee High School, Pine Manor College and graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Much of Mary’s childhood summers were spent in the Texas Hill Country. These trips began at a young age with her parents and siblings at Mary Meade where she learned to swim in the
Guadalupe River. These experiences continued at Camp Waldemar.
Her passion for all types of art permeated her entire life whether painting, photography, sewing, or design. One always felt special when receiving one of her thoughtful and creative gifts which were always accompanied by a hand made card and cleaver wrapping. It became clear to all who loved her that the true gift was Mary Bowen.
Her other passion, the outdoors, took Mary and Neil on many memorable trips to Big Bend and the western United States, traveling mostly in their travel trailer fondly known to all as “The
Moon Unit”. Throughout her adventures and travels, games and dominoes were also of great enjoyment and pleasure. On these excursions, Mary was always accompanied by her dogs,
from Francis to Bird and Millie.
Mary’s center of her universe was her immediate family, her many cousins and friends were also a priority to her and one of the real joys of her life. Family history was of great interest to her as
she was one of the unofficial Bowen “family historians” that kept family records all the way back to the 17th century in Wales. The world will be a little less creative and thoughtful place without Mary.
Mary is predeceased by her parents William George and Betty Smith Bowen and her sister Sara Bowen Bartell.
She is survived by her husband, Neil Ravella; sons, Gerald Borden Kersey III, George Bowen Kersey; brother, William George Bowen, Jr. and his wife Marjorie; nieces, Madeline Bowen Sherman and her husband Brodie, Mathilde Fowler Bowen; great niece, Kingsley Anne Sherman and numerous cousins.
