Starr Gilkey Obituary

Our beloved Starr Ann Gilkey, passed away on June 06, 2024, at the early age of 56 years in San Antonio. She was born on January 10, 1968, in Long Beach, CA. Ironically, her favorite pastime character, Tigger, first appeared in the second animated Winnie the Pooh series featurette also in 1968.

She has resided in Kerrville since 2011 with her irreplaceable and compassionate husband, Dale Gilkey. They were matching puzzle pieces!

With boundless joy, they owned and operated a computer repair company and later sold firearms. Starr insisted on labeling the company, “Gunz and Laptops”. Unsurprisingly, the business garnered a considerable amount of attention.

Through her early years, Starr attended Jordan High School in Long Beach and later obtained her diploma at an adult school in Riverside County, CA. With immense pride, she decided to volunteer for the Special Olympics, while also attending Mount San Jacinto College to obtain her Global Biliteracy Seal in ASL. With great passion, she analyzed and studied ASL (American Sign Language) for over 20 years. For approximately 10 years, she worked for the Riverside County Office of Education as an instructional assistant for the hearing impaired and special needs children.

She was an impressive and well accomplished home chef. She continuously watched cooking shows to try different recipes. Most definitely a true “Cordon Bleu”, an excellent chef.

Additionally, Starr enjoyed motorcycle riding, and traveling.  Excitingly, she was always up for a trip or an adventure. She had a passion for Texas and enjoyed the beautiful Hill Country. Without a doubt, she felt quiet and free from disturbance. Texas was her “home” and God was her priority! When a passerby would ask, “How are you? She always replied with, “Blessed, highly favored and a daughter of the King”. Undoubtedly, she practiced what she preached. She would often purchase strangers’ meals at local restaurants and helped family and friends at any time they were in need. She tried to always meet the needs of others and was a true reflection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23

A friend to many, Starr will be cherished and missed tremendously. Her mom once said, “She will always be her bright and shining Starr; she will twinkle in Heaven, now, and forever. Her mothers, mother, Irene Jackson, asked her to name her unborn baby, Starr, if it was a girl. And she did!”

She was preceded in death by her father, James Walker; and grandson Levi Williams.

Starr is survived by her husband, Dale Gilkey of Kerrville; sons, Christopher Williams of Riverside, CA and Jonathan Williams of Beaverton, OR; grandchildren, Emily Williams and Kirra Williams, of Visalia, CA, Annaniya and Malachi Williams of Beaverton, OR and Adam Hernandez of Riverside, CA; her mother, Carole Walker of Moreno Valley, CA; sisters, Shannon Walker of Long Beach, CA, Tiffany Valdez of Moreno Valley, CA.

Favorite scriptures:

"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way.; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends." 1 Corinthians 13:48a

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor death, nor any other created things, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39
