Steve Pantusa passed away at age 64, a victim of the American healthcare system. He needn't have died this young. If he'd received care upon his first thyroid lump in February 2022 and had not been denied care every time he applied, he could have lived another ten years. Steve worked hard all his life and paid his taxes. But when he got sick, all doors were slammed in his face. We, his family and friends, are outraged and you should be too.
Steven Brian Pantusa was born October 15, 1960 to Harold and Gail Pantusa in San Antonio. He had two brothers, Mark (in Heaven) and Matthew (in Arizona).
Sports, music, and time with his friends was very important to Steve. He also loved visiting his grandparents and learned a lot from them.
An athlete, Steve started young and played baseball, football, bowling, and golf. He enjoyed fishing a great deal as well. He loved concerts and went as often as he could. His first concert was Led Zeppelin and his last was Ted Nugent last year.
He was a hard worker who worked in landscaping for 20 years. His favorite job was ten years at a bowling alley where he earned the nickname Skip and made many friends that he maintained throughout his life.
Before Steve moved to Kerrville, he was a city kid. Overnight, he turned into Father Nature and became friends with all kinds of critters. He could hug deers' necks and tug on their antlers. It was really something to see, how fast he became a cowboy of sorts.
Steve lost his voice when he got his tracheostomy in April. We are confident that when he entered Heaven to meet his Savior, he met Jesus with his arms raised and singing praises with his beautiful voice.
Those mourning his absence include his wife, Jody Joy Weikel, his beloved stepdaughter Jade (James) Gonzalez; step son Josh (Steph) Weikel; his sister in law Judy (Greg) Bayne; his sister in law Rose (David) Banks; his sister in law Sandra (Chris) Langley, his niece Sandra Janette; and his brother Matthew. His dogs miss him a lot too. They are Bebe, Sebastian, Cody, and Daphne. He leaves so many good friends and church family members.
Steve was a happy, kind, honest, and faithful man who enjoyed serving God through animal rescue and ministries within the church. He was a leader in our family and knew he was loved and respected.
It was our absolute honor to love and care for him.
A service to celebrate Steve's life will be held August 16th, 2025 at 2pm. First Christian Church, 1900 Goat Creek Parkway, Kerrville, TX 78028
The family would like to thank Dr Chyle and staff at Kerrville Cancer Center; Dr Myers and staff at Good Samaritan Clinic, Fredericksburg; Dr Rad Kothmann and staff at Fredericksburg Clinic, Peterson Hospital and Peterson Hospice, and all of the kind angels we've met along this difficult journey.
