William "Dub" Martin Obituary

William Fisher Martin (W.F. / Dub / Sonny / Button / Dad / Grandpa), 89, graduated to his next life on September 23, 2025, in Fredericksburg, Texas. Dub’s body will be cremated, and the graveside celebration of life will take place at 11 am, October 25, 2025 at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring, Texas.

Dub was born in 1935 in Balmorhea, Texas, to Otha and Dorothy Martin and lived there until he was five, then moved to Pecos where he grew up and graduated from Pecos High School. Dub was very involved in school, including the band and sports. He was loved by all in his community, even “Coach Nails”.

Dub attended several secondary education schools, including Hardin Simmons, Sul Ross, Tarleton, North Texas State, and University of Colorado, finishing with his master’s degree in education. He also served his military obligation in the Texas National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves.

While attending school at Tarleton, he met the love of his life, Virginia Ann Templeton, and they were married in 1962 in her hometown Loraine, Texas. Dub and Virginia had two children, Kathryn and Brigham. Virginia died from cancer in 2009, and he mourned her for the rest of his life. He is survived by his two children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Dub was born into extreme poverty, and his father died when he was young. His mother (Granny to those of us still living) worked in a washeteria all her life to earn a meager living, and he determined early that he would carry his own weight as well as supporting his mother and live-in grandmother. A long-time friend mused about remembering Dub as a young boy standing on a box at a local diner to wash dishes to help the family have food.

A hard life made him a tough man, but his heart remained tender towards persons in need. He served the poor all his life through a strong commitment to the Big Spring food assistance program, then the Christian Assistance Ministry program in Kerrville. Staying true to form, he beat lung cancer in 1995, surviving the rest of his life on one lung. Dub’s primary final wish is that all who read this will seek God through Jesus for their eternal salvation, for a better life now on earth, and an eternity of joy in heaven after death.

If you’re not sure where to start, here is a suggestion: take five minutes and pray to God, being honest about your fears and doubts, and your desire to be saved. Begin reading the Bible every day, starting with the Book of John, and go to your local church and seek guidance. If you are already saved, but overdue for a recommitment – Just Do It!

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, CAM of Kerrville, or to a local ministry serving the poor.
